I read a couple of articles earlier today that were really laying into Monty, it sounded like they were trying to make Monty a scapegoat for our loss of cutting edge.
I'll dig out the articles and post a link later.
Personally i like Monty, sure his fielding and batting are poor but....
He's not in the side to make runs or pull off brilliant catches and diving stops. He's there to bowl left-arm spin. Sometimes I think we should just let players concentrate on what they're good at, instead of trying to make everyone an all-rounder. The sarcastic cheering he gets every time he fields the ball is starting to get on my nerves, what must it be doing to him?
and here is the applicable extract from the other article
"The biggest reason, however, seems to be Monty 'Python' Panesar. He is the Jim Carey of the England set-up, the fall-guy who offers comedic respite from the serious drama. His drop off Plunkett was bad enough, but his failure to pick up a ball that was going so slow across the grass that worms could have given it a real run for its money was head-smackingly bad.
Watching the ball travelling towards Monty is like watching a loved-one making a drunken fool of themself in front of all of your friends. What the Aussie crowd will do to him is enough to make you shudder. What he'll do when an Ashes-deciding catch is skied towards him is enough to make you lock yourself in your room until the Australians learn how to be good winners."
Yes, but his fielding really should be better, I mean even I could beat him, and I play quite a low standard, that dolly he dropped the other day was ridiculous, and if he did that to Ponting...
