Derbyshire have signed former Australia batsman Simon Katich to replace James Hopes as one of their overseas players. All-rounder Hopes pulled out of his contract with the county earlier this week because of a shoulder injury.
Derbyshire's director of cricket Dave Houghton said: "We tried to sign Simon 12 months ago, but he wasn't available.
"It was always unlikely that we could find a like-for-like replacement for James, but Simon will bring a different dimension to our side."
Houghton added: "He is exactly the sort of cricketer who can make a real impact for us.
"He is hugely experienced and has been part of the best team in world cricket for several years - and that experience and mentality will be a great benefit to our squad in addition to the runs he will bring to the side."
Katich, 31, who will be returning to county cricket after spells with Durham, Hampshire and Yorkshire, will team up with compatriot Travis Birt at the County Ground.
The left-hander is averaging over 80 in Australian domestic cricket this season, and has played 23 Tests and 45 one-day internationals for Australia.
He said: "I didn't have to think twice about taking up the opportunity. It looks like we have a talented squad of players with some youngsters with real potential."
