Gloucestershire have signed Australian batsman Marcus North on a short-term contract for the early part of the 2007 season.

He will play for Gloucestershire from the start of the season if, as expected, Hamish Marshall is called up for the New Zealand World Cup squad.

Head coach, Mark Alleyne said: “Marcus North will be joining us at the start of the season and I am extremely pleased that a player of his calibre and pedigree is joining us at this crucial stage.

"Marcus is averaging over 60 in the Australian season on the back of a very good first class season in England, so we are looking forward to continued success with Gloucestershire.”

The 27-year-old is no stranger to English county cricket having previously played for Lancashire, Durham and most recently for Derbyshire.

He is a key member of the Western Australia side, where this season he scored an impressive 239 not out against Victoria in the Pura Cup.

The left-handed batsmen and accurate off-spinner, has also played for Australia A, for whom he scored a century against Zimbabwe in 2003/2004.
