England One Day Squad?
« on: June 06, 2006, 10:49 AM »

When is the squad announced and who do we think will be in it?

We've surely got to have a spinner, but it can't be Monty with his fielding, can it?

The squad will be announced tomorrow I believe. I imagine Gareth Batty will be the spinner as Ian Blackwell is injured.

Wonder if Flintoff and Collingwood will be fit.

Its sounding like Flintoff may be rested.

No news yet! Mid-day maybe. I think they're waiting on news of Flintoff. If he does miss the series, perhaps there's more of a case for recalling Vaughan, rather than going to another stand-in captain.

Still no news! On cric info they are saying Vaughan is being considered? Surely if his fielding is still resticted he can't be picked.

The squad has now been selected:

Squad Marcus Trescothick, Andrew Strauss (capt), Alastair Cook, Ed Joyce, Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood, Geraint Jones (wk), Alex Loudon, Jamie Dalyrymple, Sajid Mahmood, Glen Chapple, Tim Bresnan, Steve Harmison, Liam Plunkett.

5 uncapped players: Joyce, Louden, Dalyrymple, Bresnan and Chapple.

A few surprises in that squad. But how many would be playing if Vaughan, Giles, Flintoff and Anderson were fit? I'm a bit concerned about the spinners, neither Loudon or Dalrymple is much more than a part-timer.

I don't know much about Dalrymple, but Louden has been bowling quite a few overs this year. Although he's not been picking up many wickets.

Chapples inclusion intrigues me. At 32 surely hes too old to break into the team?

I don't think you should necessarily write off players in their early 30s, Chapple has been doing well for Lancs this year. Good luck to him. Loudon has taken two one-day wickets for Warks this year.

These are his County Championship figures.

166 overs 507 runs  9 wickets  56.33 ave 5-109 best.

Not exactly great either!

If they don't want to go back to Batty, I'd have had Graeme Swann in as a 'proper' spinner. Not sure how he's been doing this year.

100 posts! Yay!

I quite like Graeme Swann at least he can wield the bat a bit too!

Congratulations on your hundred posts!

I don't really think England are llikely to win the series with so many star names missing ... but at least a few newcomers will get international experience.
