Uncapped Leicestershire pace bowler Stuart Broad has been called up by England for the forthcoming one-day series against Pakistan. The 20-year-old stands 6ft 7ins tall and is the son of ex-Test batsman Chris Broad, who is now an ICC match referee.
He could find himself partnering veteran Darren Gough, whose recall revives his hopes of playing in next year's World Cup.
The other new face in the squad is Sussex all-rounder Michael Yardy.
Although primarily a batsman, Yardy's left-arm spin has won him selection ahead of Alex Loudon, who was tried out against Sri Lanka.
"In the absence of Ashley Giles and Ian Blackwell, who are both injured, we're keen to look at Michael Yardy as an option with both the bat and the ball," said chairman of selectors David Graveney.
England have been boosted by the news that Steve Harmison has been passed fit after a scan on a back problem.
And his inclusion in the 16-man squad, along with Broad, Gough, Sajid Mahmood and Jon Lewis gives England a potent-looking attack deaspite the continuing absence of Andrew Flintoff.
Gough believes his recall to England's one-day side after a year out is a reward for a good year at Essex.
"I'm playing in the best one-day team in the country and my own performances have been very good - that's why I've been picked," he said.
"I'm relishing the prospect of facing Pakistan as they have some of the best one-day batsmen in the world.
"I'm delighted at another opportunity. It's going to be a challenge but I'm looking forward to it immensely."
Graveney said Broad's call-up would help solve England's new ball problems.
"Of the young bowlers currently making a strong impression in first-class cricket, Stuart Broad has performed exceptionally well for Leicestershire, as would have been noticed by the public would during the Twenty20 Cup finals day."
Gough's desire to play one-day cricket for England is undiminished
Broad's progress this summer has been guided by county coach Tim Boon, a former member of the England backroom team.
The former Oakham schoolboy has taken 40 wickets in the County Championship and was a member of Leicestershire's Twenty20 Cup-winning team.
"Proud is an understatement of how I feel. I'm struggling to believe how well he's done since making his debut last season," Broad's father told BBC Leicester.
"He loves being in the spotlight, loves the big occasion. I just hope he gets a chance to play and hasn't just been picked for experience."
The selectors have also given another chance to Middlesex batsman Ed Joyce, whose first international series was cut short earlier this summer when he injured an ankle while fielding in a Twenty20 game against Sri Lanka.
Surrey all-rounder Rikki Clarke is back in contention after a two-year absence from international cricket and Chris Read keeps his place behind the stumps after ousting rival Geraint Jones from the Test side.
The two sides will meet in a Twenty20 match at Bristol on Monday, to be followed by a series of five limited overs internationals.
Graveney said the selectors and skipper Andrew Strauss were keen to see a "far better performance" after suffering a whitewash against Sri Lanka earlier in the summer.
England have in fact won only five of their last 20 one-dayers and time is running out for them to find the key to success ahead of the World Cup.
