Veteran fast bowler Glenn McGrath has been called into Australia's 30-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. Test opener Matthew Hayden was also included in the preliminary group for the October one-day tournament, with the final squad named on 7 September.
But McGrath's former new ball partner Jason Gillespie was overlooked.
McGrath, 36, missed two tours this year to help his wife fight cancer and may play first-class cricket instead to be fit for the start of the Ashes.
"It is a work in progress," said a Cricket Australia spokesman.
"The selectors and Glenn continue to talk about the most appropriate time and place for his return to cricket."
Australia are hoping to play a tri-series against India and West Indies in Singapore and Malaysia next month as a warm-up.
Their quest to win the Champions Trophy for the first time starts in Mumbai on 18 October with the final on 5 November.
The Ashes rematch with England begins in Brisbane 18 days later.
