White steps down as Tykes skipper
« on: September 23, 2006, 23:38 PM »

Former England all-rounder Craig White has resigned as Yorkshire captain after three seasons in charge.
His decision was announced after the drawn Championship game against Durham, which saw both clubs escape relegation.

"Now is the appropriate moment to go. I led Yorkshire to promotion last season and we stayed up this year," he said.

"I am proud of my record and will support to the hilt whoever takes over," said White, who has a year left on his contract as a player.

A leading candidate to succeed White would be his predecessor Anthony McGrath, who only gave the job up to pursue his own international ambitions.

But one player who definitely will not be considered is off-spinner Richard Dawson.

The 26-year-old, who played seven Tests for England between 2001 and 2003, only played half of Yorkshire's Championship games this season and his contract is not being renewed for next summer.

His chances of a regular place in 2007 have faded following the emergence of young leg-spinners Adil Rashid and Mark Lawson.

Chief executive Stewart Regan said Dawson's salary was not sustainable for a second XI player.
